From ventilation to nutrition, now’s the time to take proactive steps that protect pig health and keep your operation running strong through the summer heat.
Proper ventilation is one of the most critical aspects of preparing a hog facility for summer. As temperatures rise, pigs become more vulnerable to heat stress, which can quickly lead to reduced productivity, compromised immune systems, or even death in severe cases. Ensuring that fans, inlets, and cooling systems are clean, fully operational, and properly adjusted for summer conditions is essential. Barn airflow should remove excess heat and moisture while supplying fresh air evenly throughout the space. Monitoring and adjusting ventilation settings regularly—especially during temperature spikes—helps maintain a stable, healthy environment for your herd.
As pigs consume less feed during hot weather, it becomes increasingly important to optimize the nutritional value of their diet and ensure consistent access to clean, cool water. Producers may need to reformulate rations to be more nutrient-dense and adjust feeding schedules to early morning or late evening, when temperatures are cooler. Electrolyte supplements can also help pigs maintain hydration and mineral balance. Alongside dietary changes, it’s critical to inspect water lines, clean drinkers, and ensure adequate water flow rates to meet increased summer demand. These proactive steps can help minimize performance losses and support pig health through the heat of summer.
